The German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ) and its project partners have launched the supraregional project “ValuES: methods for integrating ecosystem services into policy, planning and practice ” on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety. TBO interactive was commissioned to present the complex project content in a clear way and to create an interactive user experience. The result is a modern, adaptive information- and exchange platform with user-friendly interface optimally supporting policy makers in ministries and organizations with the integration of ecosystem services into key policy- and planning areas.
CHALLENGE AND SOLUTION
The aim of the platform is twofold: To advise decision-makers in ministries and organizations in selected partner countries of the GIZ on methods for ecosystem protection and to support them with the selection and integration of fitting environmental protection measures. Since, due to an abundance of methods for monetary, quantitative and qualitative detection of ecosystem services, decision-makers are often not sure how analyzes should be designed and how they can be integrated into existing frameworks. For this purpose, the web portal offers the following functions:
- Infographics and interactive maps provide the user with profound information on the importance of ecosystem services in the different project countries in a vivid and detailed way.
- Successful case studies and methods for ecosystem services analyses can be accessed via an user-friendly database filtered by geographical area of operation and policy area.
- In addition, a “methods navigator” helps the user to find and access the appropriate method for the evaluation of ecosystem services in the database by answering questions concerning the policy area and the purpose of the evaluation of the respective ecosystem.
GIZ supports the German Government in achieving its objectives in the field of international cooperation. It offers demand-driven, tailor-made and effective services for sustainable development and is, next the Development Bank KfW, the most important institution involved in projects in developing countries on behalf of the Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
